China’s newly launched LLM, Deepseek-R1, has been making waves since its debut just seven days ago. Many are calling it Silicon Valley’s “Sputnik moment,” signaling a shift in the global AI landscape.

Adding to this whirlwind week, we also witnessed Trump’s inauguration alongside controversies involving Elon Musk and other Big Tech figures.

The new “Cold War” is here, and its battleground is technology.

I recently tried Deepseek-R1 myself and noticed that its results are not only more accurate but its language feels significantly more natural.

This tech rivalry is heating up rapidly. Within just a week, Deepseek-R1 has overtaken ChatGPT in downloads and user reviews.

At the same time, the company has faced cyberattacks, https://x.com/yanisvaroufakis/status/1883920139168669869 adding an extra layer of intrigue to its development story.

What can we expect moving forward? Three things stand out:

  1. Europe entering the race: While the region already boasts Aleph Alpha, its presence in the global LLM competition has been relatively muted. Will Europe step up and assert itself in this high-stakes race?
  2. Democracy and governance debates: As with other Chinese tech innovations, discussions around democracy, surveillance, and control are sure to resurface, bringing larger political implications to the table.
  3. More layers on cybersecurity issues.

The future of AI and global tech dominance has never looked more compelling — or contentious. Subscribe for more stories on Tech x Politics.
